This canvas looks like a page torn from a favourite picture book. A fairy tale city stacks itself up a hillside in glowing gold, cream and peach, a jumble of churches, castles, towers and red roofed houses with arched doorways and narrow windows. Wide white paths and stairways wind between the buildings, and tiny figures wander along them: children carrying lanterns, a traveller with a pack, a small white deer on the right. Dark green borders frame the scene on either side.
It is the kind of canvas you can disappear into for hours, because there is always another little roof, window or figure to notice and paint. The pale walls and paths are broad, forgiving areas, while the towers, windows and tiny people are small, exacting work.
