A young man with tousled straw blonde hair tilts his head back, one amber eye open and looking away, lips slightly parted, a slim ring hanging at the corner of his mouth. Everything else is shadow, until electric blue light catches the edges of his hair, his jaw and the curve of his neck, drawing a bright outline around him against pure black.
Painting rim light is a very specific skill, and this canvas is a wonderful place to practise it. The blue highlights are narrow, bright shapes that follow the contours of the hair and skin, and they only make sense once the surrounding shadow is in place. Because the palette is limited to blues, blacks and a few warm skin tones, you can work with real confidence and see the figure emerge gradually out of the dark.
