Through the white window frame, the world opens out: a brilliant blue bay sparkling with light, a coastal town of white houses and terracotta roofs climbing a green hillside, a church tower on the ridge and small boats resting offshore.
The bay is what makes this painting feel so open, and it is lovely to work on. That deep blue water is covered in hundreds of small pale marks that read as sunlight on ripples, and the town beyond is a cluster of crisp little houses and roofs. The inside of the window is calmer, built from soft whites, blues and timber, and the cat is a bold, simple silhouette that anchors the whole composition.
