Moonrise over the Drilling Rigs Paint by Numbers Kit
A working landscape at the end of the day, and for once the machinery is not the biggest thing in the picture. The clouds are. Pink, apricot and pale orange, they tower up through the right hand side of the canvas in soft rounded masses, catching the last light along their tops. To the left the sky has already gone deep blue, with a round orange moon sitting in it and a thin band of cloud drifting across the middle. On a ridge below, a red and yellow drilling rig stands against the horizon with yellow plant beside it, and dark trees frame the foreground.
This is a painting about light and distance rather than fine detail, and the clouds carry most of it. They are built from a narrow range of warm pinks and peaches, so the work is in keeping neighbouring values close enough that the forms stay soft, then lifting the top edges lighter to suggest sun. The hills underneath move through terracotta, dusty rose and olive in broad strokes. The rig itself is small but precise, and those few bright red and yellow shapes pull the eye exactly where the composition wants it.
