Domed City Under a White Ring Paint by Numbers Kit
Two people walk up a dry grass hill with their backs to us and stop to look at what is beyond the wall. Old stone ramparts, cypress trees, a city of gilded domes and slender spires, and behind all of it a cluster of towers rising so high they lose themselves in the haze. Over the whole scene a great white ring curves through the sky, bright enough to look almost solid, and in the upper left a small craft trails a thin white line across the warmth.
The challenge and the pleasure of this canvas is that almost nothing in it is a hard line. The city sits in golden haze, so every distant building is a soft shape in the same warm family, and the depth comes from value rather than colour. You work from the pale gold sky inward, letting the domes and towers darken slightly as they come closer, until the foreground stone walls and the two figures land in the deepest tones on the canvas. Those small orange jackets are the warmest, most saturated notes in the painting, and they do a great deal of work for their size.
