Cat on a Bridge Beneath Lotus Leaves Paint by Numbers Kit
You are lying on your back in a pond, and a cat is walking over you. Big round lotus pads the size of umbrellas arch overhead on long green stems, and the sun is directly behind them, so the light comes through the leaves and turns them bright, veined and partly transparent. Underneath, a weathered stone bridge crosses the lower part of the canvas, and on it a calico cat with an orange patch and a confident upright tail is making its way along. Below the bridge, koi in orange and deep red drift through blue green water, and small bubbles float upward.
This is a painting of leaves and light, and the leaves are the reward. Each pad is built from several greens, from a pale glowing yellow green where the sun passes through to a dark blue green in the shadowed fold, with lighter veins sketched across the surface. Working those transitions is what makes the leaves look translucent rather than flat. The water is the calmer section, layered blues and soft greens, and the fish give you a few clean, saturated accents of orange that make the whole cool painting sit up. The cat itself is small but it is the storyteller, so it is worth the extra care around its markings and tail.
