Moonlit Cliff Palace Above the Clouds Paint by Numbers Kit
Palaces stacked up the side of a cliff, above a chasm filled with cloud. The roofs are dark slate with golden finials catching the moonlight, the pillars and window frames are red, and small warm lanterns glow all around the terraces and walkways. Behind it all the moon sits huge and pale, drifting in and out of cloud cover, while a sea of white mist fills the valley below so completely that the buildings look like they are floating. Dark, twisted pine trees lean out of the rock in the foreground, and stone walls and step ways climb away into the mountain behind.
This canvas depends entirely on atmosphere, so the painting is mostly about distance and mist. The palace roofs are cool slate greys, and the trick is to keep the far ones lighter and softer than the near ones so they read as further away, even though they are the same shapes. The rock is the darkest material on the canvas, near black with cool blue in the shadowed clefts, and it frames everything else. What brings the scene to life, though, are the small things: the red pillars, the golden finials and above all those scattered warm lanterns, because a handful of tiny orange dots in a very cool blue painting will draw the eye every time.
