Raspberries and Mint Splashing into Clear Water Paint by Numbers Kit
Frozen a fraction of a second after impact. Ripe raspberries, deep crimson with a soft dusty bloom across every drupelet, are tumbling into clear water, and one of them has just broken the surface and thrown up a crown of spray that curls into thin, glassy arms. Two bright green mint leaves ride the splash, one held upright by the water and one lying flatter against the current. The water itself is pale turquoise, deepening toward aqua in the troughs, and it is filled with concentric rings, tiny rising bubbles, floating droplets and a scatter of starburst reflections where the light catches the surface. A few berries sit lower in the frame, half submerged, their colour still glowing through the water.
The trick here is that there is very little pigment in the water, only the appearance of it. Most of the surface is a very light turquoise with slightly deeper crescents and rings, and the shine is created by leaving pale, almost white areas untouched rather than by painting white on top. Raspberries, by contrast, are dense and dark, built from small blocks of scarlet, crimson and deep maroon with a few dusty pink highlights, so they need a light touch and a fine brush. The mint leaves are the only true greens in the picture and they are what keeps it from turning into a single blue field, so they are worth keeping bright and slightly yellow at the edges.
