Butterflies Above a Winding Meadow Stream Paint by Numbers Kit
A shallow stream comes toward the viewer out of the middle distance, curving to the left and then right across a meadow, and the whole scene is lit by a low warm sun. The sky occupies the top third and moves from pale cream at the horizon through apricot to soft gold, with a single bright sun glow just above the hills. Ahead of it, low green hills fade into haze. In the foreground the meadow is dense with flowers: red and orange poppies that catch the light, yellow and blue daisies, clover and purple spikes, all standing in grass that is warmer and yellower where the sun touches and cooler green in the shadows. Seven or eight butterflies, in blue, violet, pink and amber, drift across the middle of the frame above the stream, and the water reflects the sky in patches of pale gold and white.
This is a picture about warmth and atmosphere rather than precise detail, so it rewards working in broad areas. The sky is a single smooth gradient and the best results come from laying it down in wide horizontal bands and blending the joins while the paint is still open, letting each band blend into the next. The stream is the other large area and it works in the opposite way, mostly pale with small darker ripples and clear white gaps left for the reflections, so it is better to under paint it than to overwork it. The flowers are small and bright against all that soft green, and they are worth doing with a fine brush and a light touch, since the picture reads as a meadow because of their abundance, not because any single bloom is accurate.
