Study Desk by an Open Window Facing a Castle Paint by Numbers Kit
Two tall windows stand wide open in the middle of the canvas and the whole picture is built around what they frame. Outside, a white castle complex sits on a green hillside: a slim clock tower with a pale spire, a long arcaded wing, and a pair of round towers with steep red conical roofs and small red flags. Beyond them, wooded green hills, then a deep blue summer sky with bright cumulus clouds and a single four pointed star. Inside, in front of the glass, a wooden sill carries a blue jug and a pale pot planted with orange and yellow flowers, while a red desk lamp leans in from the left with ivy trailing over its arm. This is a busy canvas made of many small, separate objects, which changes the working order. It is much easier to complete one zone at a time, sky, then hills, then castle, then sill, then desk, than to move around the picture following colour, because every area has its own local palette and mixing them up quickly turns the scene muddy. The building is the only truly pale element in the upper half, so the blue sky behind it should go down strong for the towers to read. The indoor half is much warmer and darker, full of browns, ochres and deep greens, and that warm cool split across the window opening is what gives the picture its sense of looking out from a sheltered room into bright daylight.
