Church Tower Village Under a Rose Coloured Sky Paint by Numbers Kit
The village sits in a shallow dip about a third of the way up the canvas, small and pale, and everything else is either the sky above it or the vegetation in front of it. The sky is a single broad field of rose pink, deepening to a warmer red along the horizon and lightening toward peach and pale coral at the top, painted in wide, loose horizontal sweeps with the odd flick of lighter brushwork. Below it the clustered houses are tiny: cream and pale yellow walls, cool grey blue gables in shadow, and roofs in bright terracotta orange red, all gathered along a low ridge and crowned by a slim church tower with a dark spire. Behind and between them, dark blue green trees. In the foreground, filling both bottom corners and most of the lower half, an enormous mass of shrubs and foliage in every green and blue green there is, painted as short curved strokes with black scribbled outlines over the top, with flecks of teal, orange and violet caught in the shadows and a few loose blades of grass at the very bottom edge.
The composition is basically two colours, and the whole picture depends on keeping them in separate camps. The sky should stay one continuous rose field with no fussy detail, so that it reads as flat light rather than cloud, while the foreground greens should stay dark, busy and cool. That value gap is what makes the little village look far away. The black scribbled lines over the bushes are the signature of the style, and they want to be drawn quickly and loosely with the liner brush once the greens are dry, not carefully traced, because their energy is what gives the foliage its life.
