Lantern on a Windowsill Above a Moonlit Sea Paint by Numbers Kit
The window is open and the whole picture is a single breath of deep blue night. Two pale stone facings frame the view on either side, with thin curtains gathered at the edges, and the sill in the foreground carries three things: a woven basket lined with pale cloth and a few green leaves, an open book lying flat with its pages catching the light, and a lantern, unlit-looking but glowing, its glass panel a warm cream and its metal frame dark. Beyond the sill, the rooftops of a coastal town step down toward the water in silhouettes of deep blue and indigo: low tiled roofs, a slender church tower with a spire, a domed chapel, ranks of dark cypresses, and a scatter of small lit windows in warm ochre. Beyond the town the sea opens out, and the moonlight on it is the brightest passage on the whole canvas, a wide field of gold and cream dashes rippling across the water. At the horizon, a dark headland sits in flat silhouette, with two tiny points of light along its shore, and above it the sky is a clean, even blue with a scatter of small stars and one bright point near the top.
Everything in this picture is the same family of blue, and the painting succeeds or fails on the size of the small warm interruptions, the lantern, the lit windows, the leaves, the moonlit path on the water. Those should be genuinely warm and kept small, so that the blue remains in charge. The sea is the largest passage to manage, and it is best approached in two stages: lay the flat blue first and then scatter the gold dashes across the lit path, keeping them horizontal and slightly irregular so the water looks calm rather than striped. The town is small and silhouetted, which means it can be blocked in dark and left, and that flatness is what gives the sea its depth.
