Ballerina Dancing Beneath a Giant Pink Bloom Paint by Numbers Kit
An enormous flower hangs over the top two thirds of the canvas, and the only thing under it is a very small dancer. The bloom is seen from below so we are looking straight into its open face: a tight bud shaped core of packed petals at the top, then layer after layer of petals falling outward and downward, painted in deep rose and coral along the upper edges, warming to salmon and soft blush, then fading all the way to ivory and near white as they thin out toward the light, with a fringed cluster of yellow stamens spilling from the centre. Long cream and pink filaments hang down at the sides, and the whole flower glows from behind. Beneath it, a small ballerina in a white leotard and a pale pink tutu stands on tiptoe with one arm raised, her dark hair pulled back, in the middle of a turn. Around her a soft green forest fills the frame in layered, blurred bands, with slim pale trunks rising on either side, faint blue and lilac blossoms scattered through the foliage, and a wide shaft of pale sunlight opening up behind her between the trees.
The scale trick only works if the two elements are treated differently. The flower should be modelled with real care, its petals shaded from warm coral at the edges into white at the centre so it feels enormous and close, while the forest must stay deliberately soft and undefined, since sharp detail in the background would shrink the flower instantly. The ballerina is tiny and her figure should be kept simple, defined mostly by her dark hair and the pale shape of her arms and skirt against the light. The single most important passage is the glow behind her, and it needs to stay very pale and slightly warm, with the surrounding greens deepening toward the edges of the canvas.
