Dreamlike Foliage in Pink, Lilac and Blue Paint by Numbers Kit
Nothing in this garden could grow anywhere real. The whole frame is filled from edge to edge with enormous leaves, each one a long tapered oval with a sharply drawn outline and a clear central vein, and they are not green. The biggest of them, in the lower half, run through a full gradient across their own width: blush pink at the outer edge, warming into coral and rose along the middle, then cooling through lilac into pale periwinkle and finally mint blue where the leaf meets the light. Others are more straightforward, deep violet, soft mauve, dusty rose or pale sage, and a few in the foreground corners are almost black purple. Slender branching stems rise between them, carrying clusters of small five petalled flowers in white, soft pink and periwinkle, with tiny buds and opening blooms scattered along their length. Behind everything, the garden recedes in layered silhouettes: banks of soft purple foliage, faint outlines of trees, and further back the hazy shapes of tall plants in a deep indigo that fades into the dark violet background at the top of the canvas.
The palette is essentially one hue with a huge range of value, and that is what makes the canvas so enjoyable and so easy to get wrong. The trick is never to blend the gradient inside a leaf, but to build it from a handful of flat adjacent bands, so the colour change reads as design rather than as shading. It is also worth painting the background depths first and keeping them genuinely dark, because the pale blue and mint leaves on top need that depth to sit forward. The small white and pink flowers are the lightest thing on the canvas and will only pop if the surrounding purple stays rich, so they are best left until last and painted cleanly.
