Immortal Lady Weeping Before a Crimson Sun Paint by Numbers Kit
She fills almost the entire canvas, and yet she is dwarfed by the thing behind her. A colossal disc of pure vermilion red rises behind the figure, flat and unshaded, and across the top of the frame a gnarled pine branch reaches in from the right with dark green needle clusters and a few loose pine needles drifting down. The figure herself is painted in profile with her face buried in one long pale hand: skin like porcelain, a red mark painted at the corner of each eye, and a mass of white hair that falls past her waist in long straight strands, held by an elaborate golden headdress of filigree and dangling beads. Her robes are the other half of the picture, black and deep, with a green silk shoulder panel embroidered in gold medallions and pale cuffs, and a great scarlet sash and train that pour straight down the centre of the canvas to the bottom edge. From her sleeves hang long knotted cords of red beadwork strung with jade rings, gold coins and a pale tassel. At the very bottom, tiny, stands a white haired swordsman in red and white, seen from behind, looking up.
The whole composition depends on two things: how flat the red disc is, and how black the black is. The sun should be laid down as an even field with almost no variation, and the surrounding darkness kept genuinely deep, because every bit of drama in the picture comes from that one hard edge between them. The figure is where the real work lies. Her black robes have to hold readable folds without ever going grey, so build them from a true black plus a cold slate blue for the lit edges, and keep those two separate. The white hair is the opposite problem, and it needs a cool grey and pale lilac in the shadows rather than working white over white, or the whole head will read as a flat shape.
