Evening Cloud Above a Blue Valley Lake Paint by Numbers Kit

The sky is doing all the talking. A single enormous cumulus cloud fills the upper middle of the canvas, and the low sun has turned it into something almost solid: bright apricot and cream along its lit left flank, warm orange and amber through the middle, and a soft rose pink along the top edge where the light thins out, with pale lilac shadows gathering underneath. Around it the sky runs through a wide quiet gradient, a clear blue at the top right corner fading down through dusty violet and mauve into a peach and coral haze along the horizon, and thin horizontal streaks of pale cloud drift across the lower sky. Beneath it, a long green hill rolls in from the left, its ridge dark with mixed woodland and its pasture slopes bright yellow green where the sun still catches them, and three or four small white farmhouses with red roofs sit scattered along the hilltop and in the folds below. Further down, a wider white house with a long roof stands on the near shore, trees crowd it, and a low mist hangs over the water. The lake itself fills the middle of the frame in a deep even blue with the mountains behind it in soft violet silhouette. Across the bottom, an entire meadow of yellow wildflowers runs from edge to edge, with dark pines standing at the left and a narrow strip of grass and small figures between the flowers and the water.

This canvas rewards careful blending in the sky and flat confidence everywhere else. The cloud is the one passage that needs real work, since it must read as soft and luminous at the same time, and the trick is to lay in the light cream and apricot first and then bring the pinks and lilacs into it while it is still open. The lake should be painted as one calm field of blue, since any fussiness there will compete with the sky. The foreground meadow is the opposite of the cloud, deliberately loose, and it works best as a scatter of small yellow marks over green rather than as individual flowers.

Calm, Spacious and Glowing

Wide open landscape and one big soft cloud make this an unhurried canvas with a very satisfying payoff, and small houses give the scale a human anchor. The finished picture suits a living room, bedroom, dining room or study, and it looks lovely in a natural wood frame. A peaceful gift for anyone who loves wide evening skies.
