Cotton Candy Clouds and a Pink Vortex Paint by Numbers Kit
This canvas is made of sugar. From the upper left, a huge vortex of hot pink, magenta, soft lilac and cream spirals inward, its edges thick and glossy like icing. Below it, banks of fluffy pink and white cloud pile up in rounded masses that look exactly like candy floss, and a pastel village of small houses with pink and red roofs lines a pale road that runs diagonally toward the corner. There is barely a dark tone anywhere on the canvas.
Painting in pinks turns out to be far more interesting than it sounds. You will work through rose, blush, fuchsia, mauve and cream, judging constantly how warm or cool each mass of cloud should be, and the vortex rewards long, curving strokes. The little village at the end is quick and charming, with its coloured rooftops standing out against the pale road beneath them.
