The vortex and the fields offer two very different kinds of painting in one canvas. The swirl demands long, decisive curves of alternating cool and hot colour, which is a genuinely satisfying thing to do once you find the rhythm. The fields below are calmer, built from wide diagonal bands of gold, yellow and lilac that fill quickly, leaving the little village as a charming finish.
