A house that has been quietly taken over by its own garden. Every roof is covered in green turf, moss and little wildflowers, so cream walls, arched wooden doors and small chimneys surface out of the hillside rather than sitting on top of it, and on the left a round tower lifts a slim spire up against the trees. In front, a stone path leads through a cottage garden packed with flowers, mushrooms, shrubs and a small white gazebo, with rabbits on the lawn and chairs and tables set out under parasols. Beyond the hedges, broad green fields roll away in bands toward the horizon.
The palette is overwhelmingly green, and that is the whole challenge and the whole charm. The turf roofs are bright yellow green where the sun hits, the surrounding trees are much deeper blue green, the fields behind are pale and flat, and the garden is full of small saturated greens. Keeping those apart is what gives the picture depth, since the fields must stay the lightest and the foreground the richest. The cottage itself provides the few warm accents, cream render, brown timber and a scatter of red and orange flowers, and those small warm notes are what stop the whole thing from reading as one flat mass of leaves. The detail is the reward here: mushrooms, rabbits, a watering can, a plate of something on a table.
