Persian Cat with Blue Eyes in a Flowering Garden Paint by Numbers Kit
A white Persian cat sits upright in tall grass and looks up and away, past the frame rather than at the viewer. Its coat is the centre of the picture: an enormous ruff of long white and cream fur fans out around the chest and shoulders, painted as soft overlapping strands with pale lilac and blue shadows running through the cool side, and the flat face carries a small pink nose, dark eye markings and two enormous round blue eyes with deep navy pupils. Whiskers sweep out well beyond the cheeks. Around the cat, small flowers in coral, yellow, pink, blue and violet rise out of green grass and foliage, and two butterflies, one pale and one dark, drift against a background of saturated deep blue sky.
The whole canvas hangs on two contrasts. The first is warm against cool: the cat is essentially white, and white fur only reads as fur if the shadows in it are painted properly, which here means cool lilac and pale blue rather than grey. The second is the cat against the sky, the deepest colour in the picture, so the blue should go down strong and even. The flowers are small and bright by comparison and they are what stops the scene from becoming cold, so it is worth keeping their corals, yellows and pinks clean rather than muted. The eyes and whiskers want the finest brush in the set and should be left until everything else is dry.
