Sunflowers on a Windowsill Over Golden Fields Paint by Numbers Kit
The near and the far are painted in exactly the same loose language here, and that is what makes the picture feel so open. In the foreground, a deep blue window frame edges the right side while the sill runs across the bottom in a pale cream, and on it sits a stack of three books with teal and ochre spines carrying a white teacup painted with a simple blue band, a red pomegranate behind them and a few loose berries scattered across the sill. To the right, a tall jug in blue and white curdling pattern holds five or six sunflowers whose orange yellow petals and dark seed centres face in different directions, with a couple of slimmer yellow blooms and thin seed pods rising behind them, their long green stems and leaves crossing the sill. Beyond the ledge, the whole of the middle ground is a single enormous field of golden yellow wheat, marked by a narrow dark path and the green shadows of two cypress trees. Past it, a flat band of pale blue water, then a hillside with pink and green fields, a cluster of white houses with terracotta roofs, and a pale sky.
Everything is built from small, separate blocks of colour rather than smooth gradients, so the canvas rewards patience at the expense of blending. Working in short dabs, side by side, keeps the surface alive the way the original does, and the temptation to smooth the sky or the field should be resisted. The two big jobs are the wheat, which needs several neighbouring yellows and ochres to avoid going flat, and the patterned jug, where the blue and white curdling must stay crisp. Sunflowers are the focal point, and their dark brown centres against bright petals give the eye a place to land, so it is worth spending time on their petals and leaving the smaller blooms looser.
