Vermilion Gate Reflected in Still Water Paint by Numbers Kit
An ornate gate stands on a low stone platform at the exact centre of the canvas, its red pillars and deep arched eaves picked out in gold trim, and through the opening a pale light pours out onto the steps. Before it, painted very small, a single figure in a red robe stands facing the light. Everything else is forest and water. To the left of the gate, a gnarled old tree spreads wide scarlet and crimson foliage, its dark trunk and branches wreathed in mist, set against a solid wall of pure red. To the right, tall blue green pines and cypresses rise against a cold teal sky, with slim pale trunks and a scatter of gold leaf and red blossoms across their branches, and a low rocky bank carrying small golden shrubs. The whole scene is doubled in the lower half of the canvas, where the water holds a soft, wavering reflection of the gate, the trees and the glow, broken by a few vertical strokes.
The composition is deliberately severe, and it works because the picture is divided into flat colour fields rather than blended space: a red panel, a black panel and a teal panel, each one almost unmodulated. That means edges matter far more than gradients. Where the red field meets the black, and the black meets the teal, the transition should be crisp, and the great temptation, to soften those divisions, should be resisted. The reflection is the one place where softness belongs, and it is also the payoff: it should be painted slightly weaker and cooler than the objects above it, with its own loose vertical texture, so it reads as water rather than as painted floor.
