Peeking Black Cat Among Pink Blossom Paint by Numbers Kit
The cat takes up less than half the canvas, and it is the flat black of it against all that pink that makes the picture work. Only the head and one shoulder are visible, cropped by the right edge, with two tall triangular ears standing straight up and short white fur marks drawn in fine white lines around the face and inside the ear. The eyes are the focal point, two large almond shapes in vivid jade green with narrow black pupils, set above a small pink nose and a soft mouth line, and long white whiskers sweep out across the dark fur on both sides. On the left, a branch comes in from the corner and carries a dense cascade of blossom: five petalled flowers with notched tips in pink, rose, blush and pale cream, painted flat with tiny darker stamens at their centres, along with long oval leaves with sharp pointed tips and a heavy black central vein. Almost all of the drawing in this canvas is done with line rather than shading, and that changes how it should be approached. The flower petals stay flat, each one a single colour with a few darker stamens on top, and the leaves are defined by their black vein and outline rather than by gradient. That means the crispness of those lines matters more than smoothness inside them, so a fine liner brush is the right tool. The cat’s fur is textured with thin white strokes and flecks over solid black, which should be added last and sparingly, because too many will turn the face grey and lose the graphic punch. The eyes are the one place that repays real care, and it is worth taking time over the highlights.
