Flower Shop Tucked Under Green Blossoming Trees Paint by Numbers Kit
The shop almost disappears into its own garden. Its front is painted a soft grey green with a darker green signboard above, a deep green threshold and a pair of windows flanking a dark glazed door, and through the glass a dense mass of cut flowers can just be made out in pink, orange, cream and dusty blue. The whole facade is buried in greenery: an enormous canopy of leaves fills the entire upper half of the canvas, painted in bright yellow greens and deeper blue greens as flat rounded clusters scattered with small white blossoms, and the dark brown arms of the trees cut diagonally through it in every direction. Below, the pavement in front of the shop is crowded with flowers in pots and dark wooden planters: densely packed blue hydrangea in a pale blue pot, a tall dark planter overflowing with orange and red blooms, a wide blue bowl of white and pink hydrangea, red and pink pots, and a long dark trough running along the front filled with orange, red, pink and purple flowers. Past the flowers, a green lawn scattered with white daisies and pale blue cornflowers stretches across the bottom of the frame, with a few tall blades of grass drawn in short vertical strokes.
For a picture with so many flowers in it, the palette is surprisingly restrained, and that is the point: it is a green painting with small bright interruptions. The canopy should be painted as flat, unmodulated patches of neighbouring greens rather than as detailed foliage, which is both faster and closer to the original, and the few dark brown branches crossing it should be laid in confidently so that they read as structure. The flower pots are the reward, and their pinks, reds, blues and oranges are the only places on the canvas where saturated colour appears, so they are worth doing with a fine brush and a light touch.
