Siamese Cat Peering Through Blue Hydrangea Paint by Numbers Kit
The cat looks straight at us from the right half of the frame, cropped at the chest. Its coat is a warm cream, subtly shaded with pale grey and taupe across the forehead, the bridge of the nose and around the outside of the eyes, and its muzzle, chin and chest are almost white. The ears are the classic Siamese points: dark chocolate brown on the outside, soft dusty pink inside, and rather larger than they need to be. Two round, brilliantly blue eyes with narrow pupils dominate the face, set above a small rose pink nose and a delicate closed mouth, and fine black lines radiate from the nose to describe the muzzle and whiskers. On the left, blue hydrangea crowds in behind the cat: rounded four petalled florets in periwinkle, cornflower, powder blue and deep indigo, each with a tiny darker centre, arranged in dense overlapping heads. Around and between them long oval leaves with pointed tips, painted flat in spring green with heavy black midribs and side veins. The background is an even, deep bottle green.
This picture is built on one clean idea, warm cream against cool blue and green, and the whole thing depends on the cat staying genuinely warm. Adding any blue to its fur will kill the contrast, so its shadows should be grey and taupe rather than cool. The hydrangea florets are painted flat, one or two tints each with a single darker centre dot, and they should stay that way, because overworking them into gradients will lose the crisp printed quality that makes the flowers look like flowers. The dark green background must go down first and go down deep, since the pale cat and the mid blue flowers both rely on it.
