Lotus in a Celadon Vase Paint by Numbers Kit
One flower open, one bud waiting, and a set of leaves at every stage in between. The vase is celadon green with a soft cloudy glaze, and out of it rise slender stems carrying a pink lotus in full bloom with a golden centre, a tight pink and white bud, and broad leaves that bend over the rim of the vase. Some leaves are still fresh, deep green with pale veins; others have gone bronze, ochre and paper brown. Highest of all, a dried seed pod and a curled leaf hang from the longest stem. The background is a soft mottled blue wash.
This is a still life about restraint, and it is built on two ideas. The first is the pink of the lotus petals, which has to move from a strong rose at the tip through soft blush to almost white near the stem, and that gentle gradient is the most delicate work on the canvas. The second is the contrast between fresh leaves and spent ones, where deep saturated greens sit directly against warm browns and golds. The vase itself is the calmest section, a slow blend of pale greens and greys, and the blue background is deliberately uneven so it looks washed on rather than printed.
