This canvas is all light and dark. A woman with long blue hair stands with her face lifted, cupping a jewelled golden crown in both hands as orange flames curl up from it. A delicate gold thorn crown sits in her hair, and she wears ornate plated armour over her shoulders and arms, polished gold over warm bronze, with a flowing white gown beneath. Behind her sweep enormous black feathered wings, and the background is almost entirely dark except for a few gold stars.
The gold armour is where most of the work lies, and it rewards patience: hundreds of small plates, engraved details and bright specular highlights, all built from warm yellows, browns and flashes of white. Against that, the blue hair is a smooth, cool counterweight, and the black wings are a large, satisfying fill. The flame at the top is the brightest point and worth saving for last.
