This canvas is a sky with a secret in it. An enormous bank of soft pink cloud fills the frame, rolling and folding like cotton candy, and down the right side runs a jagged tear of pure black space scattered with bright white stars and blue specks. Dark swallows with orange throats swoop through the pink air, and at the bottom of the canvas the pale towers and spires of a city rise out of the cloud, with a brilliant white starburst glowing between them.
The cloud is the most enjoyable part of this painting. It is built from soft, rounded shapes in pale pink, warm cream and violet shadow, so you work in gentle sweeps and the volume appears gradually, almost without effort. Against that softness, the black rift is a hard edge, and the swallows are small, precise silhouettes that give the whole scene its feeling of movement.
