Two enormous dark trunks frame the view like pillars, and between them the canopy tears open into a burst of brilliant yellow green light. Long shafts of daylight spear down through the leaves, catching every layer of foliage on the way, and the whole air is filled with hundreds of glowing yellow fireflies and a few translucent butterflies drifting slowly through the beams.
The light is the reason to paint this canvas, and it works on layers. The deepest shadows in the corners are almost black, the mid foliage is a mass of olive and forest greens, and the heart of the picture blows out into luminous yellow greens and near whites. The fireflies are hundreds of tiny soft dots scattered over the top, and they are the detail that turns a woodland study into something enchanted.
