You are walking down a market street, and everything is framed for you. Dark stone buildings rise on both sides, red awnings stretch out overhead, and lanterns and ropes of drying vegetables hang between them, so the whole picture is a corridor leading your eye outward. The single brightest passage in the painting is that sunlight falling through the gap, and protecting that brightness by keeping everything around it muted is the one rule this canvas really asks you to keep.
