Farmhouses Above a Blue Lake at Dusk Paint by Numbers Kit
The picture is arranged in flat horizontal bands, and the whole scene is quiet. At the top, the sky runs from a soft violet blue at its highest point down through mauve into a band of coral and deep orange along the horizon, with thin horizontal streaks of lighter cloud drifting across it. Below that, a long green hill rolls across the canvas, its slopes painted in broad flat fields of green that get darker toward the left, dotted with small dark conifers, a few tiny white farmhouses high on the ridge and a single figure walking beside one of them. Lower still, the houses come larger: four or five white and pale grey buildings with terracotta roofs, set among dark trees on the shoreline, one of them with a long low barn beside it. In front of them, a strip of bright gold field catches the last light and gives the whole canvas its warmest note. The bottom third is the lake itself, a deep flat blue with soft vertical marks of gold, cream and violet reflecting the sky and the field, and on it, very small, a single boat with a figure rowing across the middle of the water.
There is almost no detail anywhere in this canvas, which makes it an exercise in getting the big shapes right and then leaving them alone. The sky gradient is the largest and most delicate passage, and the best approach is broad horizontal bands blended while wet, keeping the transition from violet to orange smooth rather than stepped. The lake works the other way: it should be laid down as a flat blue first and the reflections added afterwards as loose, broken vertical strokes, since too much blending will turn the water opaque. The single golden field is the pivot of the whole picture, and if that strip stays saturated the scene will hold together.
