Tabby Cat Licking the Earth Paint by Numbers Kit
A cat the size of a solar system has found the planet and decided to taste it. The head fills the frame: grey and brown tabby stripes over a broad muzzle, long white whiskers, half closed eyes with just a sliver of amber showing, and a soft pink nose. The tongue stretches down out of the frame and touches the curve of the Earth, which sits in the lower part of the canvas in deep blue ocean, white cloud swirl and soft green land. Behind them both, a field of stars.
The two halves of this canvas ask for completely different things, which is exactly why it is fun. The cat is all fur, and fur comes from short, close directional strokes in a narrow range of greys and warm browns, with pale cream on the muzzle and cool greys in the shadow under the chin. The Earth is the opposite, smooth and layered, built from soft blended blues, greens and white cloud, and it has to look round, which is entirely a matter of following the curve with the light and shade. The stars are the easy, satisfying finish, quick bright dots that make the whole thing sit in space.
