Monumental Concrete Wall and a Lone Figure Paint by Numbers Kit
This canvas exists to make you feel small. A colossal curved concrete surface fills almost the entire frame, sweeps up and out of sight, its weathered grey face divided by long grids of panel seams and crossed by a great diagonal ridge that catches pale light on one side and drops into darkness on the other. At its base, a soft green field of grass runs the width of the canvas, and in the middle of that field stands one tiny dark figure, completely dwarfed.
The wall is a study in grey, and that is what makes it so satisfying to paint. It is built from dozens of closely related tones, cool blue greys in the shadow, warm pale greys where the light hits, and mottled stains and streaks that give the concrete its age. Rather than blocking in flat colour, you work in long, steady strokes along the seams, and the surface gradually gains its monumental weight. The green field at the bottom is a calm, simple reward.
