Hidden Calico Kitten Among Blue Hydrangea Paint by Numbers Kit
A kitten sits deep inside a mass of blue flowers, and only its head and one front paw are visible above the petals. Its fur is a calico patchwork: white across the muzzle, chest and the front of the face, ginger orange over the left ear and left side of the head, black on the right ear and around the right eye, with a small dark smudge above the nose and a soft grey shadow under the chin and along the paw. The ears are rounded and gently pink inside, and two very large round eyes look up and to the left, dark brown and heavily highlighted, set above a tiny pink nose. Fine white whiskers spread across the blue petals either side. The hydrangea fills the entire frame around the cat, painted head by head as clusters of four petalled florets in deep indigo, royal blue, cornflower, pale azure and periwinkle, each floret with a slightly darker centre. Several of the flowers catch a warm golden light from the upper left, so their petals turn cream, peach and soft apricot where the sun rests on them, and pale green stems and a few deep green leaves show through the gaps between the heads.
The most important thing in this canvas is the warm light that falls on the upper faces of the florets. It is tempting to paint every hydrangea the same blue, but the picture only comes alive because a handful of the petal groups catch that gold, and those warm patches are what make the flower mass look three dimensional rather than like wallpaper. They should go in early and stay relatively clean rather than being glazed over with blue. The kitten should be built with the orange, black and white patches distinct from one another, keeping the boundaries between them soft but readable, and its large eyes are the natural focal point, so the highlights there are worth doing carefully.
