Heavy black lids fringed with pale gold lashes surround it, and beyond them the hide is armour: overlapping scales of dark blue and violet, every single one edged in gold.
The iris is the most absorbing part of the painting. It is built from dozens of closely related golds, ambers and blues, with fine radiating lines and a sharp highlight, and it is the small decisions in there that make the eye look wet and alive. The scales around it are the opposite kind of work: methodical, repeated shapes with gold rims that you build row by row, and they give the canvas its incredible texture.
