Irises in Blue and Violet Against a Dark Sky Paint by Numbers Kit
Three irises fill the canvas, and behind them the background is almost black. Each flower is built from three upright petals and three falls that curl downward, and the colour moves across them in long bands: pale hyacinth blue at the top of the standards, deepening through periwinkle and violet into a rich plum purple along the falls, with a bright golden beard and a fan of white veins marking the centre of every bloom. Around and between them, sprays of tiny white flowers on thin wire stems, a tall sage green bud, and broad striped leaves that sweep diagonally across the picture, their surfaces lit by a pale yellow green that is much lighter than the navy behind it. Every blossom carries a fine gold outline.
The whole picture depends on the flowers staying bright against a very dark ground, so the background should go down first and go down properly deep, a true midnight navy with no lightening toward the edges. Inside the petals the shading is a matter of holding back: the blues are closest in value near the top of each standard, and the separation comes from keeping the violet band clean rather than from adding white. The white markings on the falls are the smallest and most precise work on the canvas, and they want a fine liner brush and a steady hand. The leaves are what give the composition its sense of movement, so it is worth painting their yellow-green highlights confidently rather than blending them into the shadow.
