Lamplit Steps Through a Hillside Town Paint by Numbers Kit
A narrow flight of stone steps climbs away from the viewer between tall houses, and the light in the scene comes from only two places: a pair of street lamps standing on the steps and the warm windows of the buildings either side. The lamps throw a broad, low pool of orange light across the paving, catching the risers and softening into rose and mauve as it fades, and everything the light does not reach falls back into deep violet, indigo and cool grey blue shadow. On the right, a tall pale stone building carries three storeys of tall shuttered windows, one of them blazing with the brightest warm yellow on the canvas, the others dark or dimly lit. On the left, a steeper white house with balconies sits amongst dark trees and shrubs, and behind them a tall thin conifer rises against the sky. Further up the hill the town continues in soft focus, receding into a pale blue grey haze dotted with tiny points of light.
This is a painting of one colour doing all the talking: the warm orange, brown and yellow of lamplight against a whole world of cool blue and violet. The trick is to commit. The lit areas should be genuinely warm and bright, the shadows genuinely deep and blue, and very few mid tones should be allowed in between, since it is the size of that jump that makes the scene feel like night. The wet paving is the most rewarding passage, because it carries the largest reflection of the lamps, and it works best when the light is laid down broad and slightly blurred rather than drawn as a sharp shape.
