Overgrown Garden with a Colossal Statue Paint by Numbers Kit
An old garden that has been left to itself, and a statue that has been losing its argument with the planting for a very long time. The figure of a man, carved at impossible scale, rises out of the greenery chest deep, palms resting near the top of a stone base that the garden has already claimed. In the right foreground a woman in a head wrap stands in profile with a small animal held against her chest, watching. Between them, robed figures stroll the pale gravel paths past palms, ferns, spiky agaves and beds of flowering plants.
The pleasure of this canvas is the green. There are dozens of greens here, and the art is in keeping them distinct: cool blue greens in the deepest shade, yellow greens where the sun lands on the tips of the tallest leaves, grey greens on the paths and shadowed walls, and pale mint where the air thins out toward the horizon. Fine dark outlines wrap every leaf, so even when two greens sit beside each other, the shapes stay readable. Take your time with the layering and it becomes a genuinely absorbing painting, because there is always another plant, another leaf, another small figure to find.
