Lone Red House in a Wide Green Landscape Paint by Numbers Kit
A single small house sits almost exactly in the upper middle of the canvas, and everything else is land. The building is tiny and very red, a simple gabled box with a white door, a couple of small windows and a slim chimney, its roof the brightest vermilion on the whole picture. The lawn immediately around it is a deeper green and a long, soft-edged shadow stretches away to the left, showing that the light is coming from the right. Two white roads meet and cross just below the house, one running in from the right edge and the other cutting diagonally down and away to the bottom right, and the ground they cross is an enormous, entirely empty field. Rendering them as large, slightly imperfect flat shapes in several distinct registers, rather than as one even coat, is what gives the field its scale, and mixing too few of them will make the canvas look like a paint chart. The red house is the single focal point and needs to be clean and unmodulated, since any shading will make it look fussy at this size. The white roads should stay pale and slightly irregular along their edges, and the long shadow to the left of the house is worth getting right, because it is the only clue about the time of day in the whole image.
