Seaside Bookshop Under a Giant Tree Paint by Numbers Kit
A round white stone building right on the edge of the water, and an enormous tree leaning out over it like a roof. On the ground floor, books are shelved under green awnings that open straight onto the terrace. Upstairs, tall blue shutters flank a white railing balcony where people lean on the rail and look at the sea. The roof is warm terracotta tiles with a small chimney, and beneath the tree there are tables, chairs, readers, and a blue bus waiting on the cobbles.
There is a lot going on, but it is all built out of clear shapes, which is what makes it such a good canvas to spend time in. The stone walls are not flat grey: they are warm cream, pale ochre and soft brown, with cool blue shadows under the eaves. The tile roof gives you rich oranges and reds in small regular rows. The tree is the highlight. That canopy is a whole canopy of greens, bright yellow green where the sun comes through, deep blue green in the shade, and painting those shifts is what gives the branches their weight. The water is the calm part, flat turquoise with a few pale flecks for sunlight.
