Poppies Drifting Through White Paint Swirls Paint by Numbers Kit
A figure emerges from a storm of paint and then dissolves back into it. In the upper middle of the canvas the pale profile of a woman can just be made out, eyes closed and brow lowered, her face suggested rather than drawn, with a loose mass of warm orange hair falling away to the left and merging into the background. Across the middle, a wide river of thick white paint pours diagonally from top to bottom, heaped up in places into ridges and folds with a visible knife texture, and its edges fray open into a spray of white dots and soft arcs. Riding that current are four or five large poppies, painted in deep vermilion and crimson with dark centres and pale petals turning to blush where they thin out, and their stems trail away into thinner lines toward the bottom left. Everything else is dark: deep navy blue flowing through the lower left and across the bottom of the frame, and pure black around the upper and right edges, thickly scattered with white, orange, red, blue and gold splatters of every size.
The canvas lives on texture and contrast, and the two need to be handled in completely different ways. The white mass should be built up thickly and deliberately, pushing the brush in ridges and turning the corner sharply at the edges rather than feathering them, because that heavy physical paint is what makes the poppies look wet. The blues and blacks, by contrast, should be laid in smooth and deep, so the white has something solid to sit on. The face is the subtlest passage and needs the least paint: only a few values on the brow, cheek and chin, with the rest left to the surrounding orange, since overworking it will destroy the effect of a figure emerging from the paint.
