Paper Collage on Blue Paint by Numbers Kit
A pile of paper scraps pinned together on a flat blue ground, the way a wall in a studio fills up over a summer. On top is a brown kraft paper bag carrying bold lettering and a glossy illustration of a hot dog with mustard and green relish, held down at the top edge by a pink bulldog clip. Underneath and around it sit a torn notepad page covered in handwriting, a black and white photograph of a woman with short dark hair, a green printed ticket, a small portrait stamp, two thin black sticks and a loose orange line curling along the bottom.
Collage looks complicated and paints very simply, because every element is a flat shape. There is almost no blending anywhere. What matters instead is edges: the torn white rim on each scrap of paper, the crisp boundary between one piece and the next, and the small drop shadows where sheets overlap. The kraft bag is the biggest flat area and the most satisfying, and the hot dog illustration on it is the one place you get to paint something glossy, with a bright highlight running along the length of the sausage. The black and white photograph is the section that rewards care, because greys that are too close together will turn it into a smudge.
