A sphere the size of a world, and it has been opened. The surface is packed with mechanical city: layers and layers of grey structure, grids of tiny windows and long lit channels, so dense that it reads as a single colossal object rather than a collection of buildings. Across its face the structure fractures and peels back, and out of the opening blazes a golden core, bright enough to wash out everything near it. Needles and thin spires project from the glowing gap. Below, light haze drifts through the dark, two small craft drag bright trails across the lower corner, and a pale moon hangs high on the right.
This canvas is essentially a study in greys lit by one enormous light source. The structure is built from cool blue greys that deepen as they turn away from the core, and the trick is to keep those greys close together so the surface reads as continuous metal instead of patchwork. The tiny lights are what sell the scale: hundreds of small warm yellow and white marks, each one barely more than a dot, but together they give the sphere its sense of impossible size. The core is the opposite, all heat, pale gold to near white, and the contrast between that and the cold grey around it is the whole point of the composition.
