Description

Terraced Flower Village on a Spring Hillside Paint by Numbers Kit

The viewpoint is high up on the slope and the whole village tumbles away below. A pale stone lane enters at the top right, curves left across the hillside and then swings back and down through the middle of the frame, drawing the eye from the little church at the top all the way to the gate in the lower left corner. Along it, white and cream houses gather with terracotta and slate roofs, some tall and square with shutters and dormers, one with a walled vegetable patch beside it, and small dark cars park along the road or turn in the lane while a dozen tiny figures walk up and down in ones and twos, one in a bright red coat. Between the buildings the hillside is farmed in long colour bands: rows of pink, orange, yellow, purple and white flowers laid out like ribbons across the slope, with green meadows and dark conifers dividing them. In the foreground a thick tree trunk rises at the left edge, a branch of pink blossom hangs down across the top of the frame shedding petals, and a flowering shrub crowds the bottom right over a stone wall.

The picture is a study in depth built from repeated small shapes, and the way to keep it from turning into noise is to work in layers rather than across the whole canvas at once. The far hillside should be painted paler, cooler and simpler than the foreground, since atmospheric distance is what gives the village its scale. Roofs are the strongest repeating motif and they will carry the eye, so their oranges and greys need to stay consistent as they recede, getting lighter and less saturated further back. The flower terraces are pure colour notes and should be kept clean rather than blended, and the blossom branch across the top is worth painting crisply, because it frames the whole view.

There is a great deal to notice here, from the parked cars to the figures in the lane, which makes this a canvas to work through slowly and enjoy. The finished picture suits a kitchen, dining room, living room or hallway, and it looks lovely in a natural wood frame. A cheerful gift for travellers and anyone who loves a village in spring.
