Description
Umbrella Holding a Pool of Goldfish Paint by Numbers Kit
A white umbrella lies open and upside down on the surface of the water, and its canopy has become a small pond. The shaft rises out of the centre and hooks over at the top right, pale gold with a black handle, and the eight dark ribs spread out from the hub to the tips, dividing the white panels. Inside those panels the water holds four or five bright orange goldfish, each with a soft white and cream underbelly and a flick of a tail, drifting in slow circles around the centre of the canopy where concentric rings of ripple spread outward, pale blue and white against the deeper turquoise. Below and around the umbrella, the water opens out into broad painted patches of blue, teal and aqua, broken everywhere by palette knife strokes of cream, yellow, peach and pale pink that read as sunlight bouncing off the surface, and one more goldfish swims up in the bottom right corner. The canopy’s outer panels catch the same light and are brushed with warm yellow, orange and pink over the white.
Almost everything here is done with a loaded brush and a quick stroke, and the picture gets worse, not better, if that is smoothed away. The best approach is to lay down the underlying blues and greens of the water first, then come back over them with the pale yellow, cream and orange marks as short separate dabs, letting them sit on the surface rather than blending in, since that is exactly what creates the impression of broken light. The umbrella itself needs the same treatment: white panels first, then warm dabs of yellow and pink over the sunny edges. The goldfish are the only elements that want clean shapes, and their bright orange against all those cool blues and whites is what stops the canvas from turning into a single blue field.

Bright, Playful and Genuinely Surprising
The loose, painterly handling means this is a quick and forgiving canvas with a wonderfully lively result, and the idea behind it is the kind of thing guests stop and look at twice. It suits a living room, kitchen, bathroom or hallway, and it looks lovely in a white or pale blue frame. A charming gift for anyone who likes a little surreal humour.
