Carousel and Ice Rink in a Snowy Village Square Paint by Numbers Kit
The viewpoint is high, looking down into a village square at night, and the whole scene is lit by two things: the ice and the lights. At the centre, a roundabout turns on its own small island, topped by a tall pink and cream striped canopy with a gold crown finial, ringed by a scalloped awning picked out in lights and filled underneath with tiny horses, carriages and brightly dressed riders, its base a solid warm pink. Around it, a wide oval of ice stretches across the square, painted in pale turquoise and sky blue with long soft reflections of the carousel smeared across its surface, and small dark figures scattered over it, skating, walking hand in hand, or seated in a little boat shaped sleigh. A white railing runs around the rink with a few benches and a blue bench at the front. Beyond the ice, houses crowd the frame in pale pinks, mauves, lilacs and blues, their roofs deep with snow, every window glowing warm orange yellow so the buildings read as lit from within, and dark blue green pines stand between them. Strings of small warm bulbs cross the buildings in the foreground, and a snowman and a decorated tree sit at the bottom edge.
The charm of this picture comes from the colour scheme, which is almost entirely pastel, and the way it stays luminous despite being a night scene. That effect depends on the warm windows being genuinely warm and small against all the cool blue and pink, so they should be placed last, and on the ice holding large calm areas of light blue with only soft, blurred reflections over it. Snow is best painted as shapes of shadow rather than as white paint, so the darker blues and lilacs that gather along the edges of roofs and around the trees are what will give the picture its depth.
