Balcony Plants Framing a Star Filled City Night Paint by Numbers Kit
We are standing indoors looking out through an open balcony door, and the frame is filled with the things closest to us. Pale cream walls and curtains border both sides, a large potted plant with huge round leaves stands in the bottom left corner, a hanging basket with trails of small leaves drops from the upper left, and on the right a teal blue chest of drawers carries a shelf of smaller plants. In the bottom right corner a red sofa with a mustard yellow patterned cushion and a cream one cuts into the frame, and a small framed picture hangs on the right wall. Between us and the street, a white railing runs across with its balusters evenly spaced, and beyond it masses of dark green foliage and tall trees stand on the far side of the road. The sky above is a deep midnight blue with a bright crescent moon in the upper right, a scatter of stars and soft streaks of thin cloud.
The composition works by layering, near objects large and warm, mid ground greens dark, far buildings pale and small, and the sky flat behind them all. The single most useful decision is to keep the dark foliage genuinely dark, because everything else in the picture relies on it as a backdrop, and to keep the sky clean and even so the moon and stars can glow. The plants in the foreground are the most detailed passage, and their leaves look best painted as flat shapes in two or three greens rather than blended. The lit windows are small and simple, but they are what make the scene read as night rather than dusk, so they should be warm and definite.
