A small figure sits on the curve of a tiny round planet with his back to us, head tipped up. His hair is a bright tousled gold, a long yellow scarf streams out sideways in the wind, and he wears a blue jacket and trousers over brown boots, one hand resting on his knee. This is a picture about movement and light rather than detail, so the sky should be painted as one continuous swirl, following the curve of the spiral rather than filling the numbered sections as separate shapes. The blues need to stay clean and saturated, because the whole scene glows or doesn’t depending on that. The planet is the warm counterweight, and here the brushstrokes should stay visible and slightly coarse, since a smooth surface would make the small figure look pasted on. The scarf and the hair are the two places where a crisp, confident stroke does the most good: they are the only elements suggesting wind, and if they go soft the composition loses its sense of height.
