A dressing table covered with old things, and every one of them has a story. Behind, a tall arched mirror frame in heavily carved gold sits against a soft sage and cream plaster wall, its glass holding nothing but dark green reflections of leaves. Leaning across it is an oval plate painted with a faded botanical study of leaves and coral coloured blooms, its rim chipped and gilded. The drawing here is loose and painterly, which means it is forgiving, but the tricky part is that so many objects share the same narrow range of cream, sage, gold and dusty pink. Separation comes from the darks: the deep green inside the mirror, the shadowed undersides of the frames, the dark wood of the box and the deep sage of the background, and those are worth placing deliberately rather than blending away. Gold is the only really specific colour note, and it works best when it is built from two or three tones, a cool dark ochre underneath and a bright pale yellow along the lit edges, rather than one flat metallic shade.
