Crescent Moon Above Roses on a White Staircase Paint by Numbers Kit
A slim crescent moon hangs in the upper left, ringed by a faint halo and a scatter of small stars, against a sky of deep teal blue with a few pale streaks of thin cloud across the lower half. Taking up most of the right side is an enormous bank of cloud lit from below, and it is the loudest thing in the picture: cream and pale peach along the top, then apricot, coral, salmon pink and warm orange, with soft lilac and mauve shadows gathering in the folds. Below, a white stone balustrade climbs diagonally out of the frame, its smooth curved handrail and turned balusters catching warm light on one side and cool shadow on the other, and a dark wooden staircase runs down beside it. Red roses grow up through the railing from the lower right, with deep green foliage, a handful of tight buds and open blooms in crimson and scarlet.
There are two very different jobs in this canvas. The cloud is all about softness and wants broad blended strokes, building from the deepest coral at the base up through peach into cream, with the transitions kept loose so it keeps moving. The balustrade is the opposite: clean pale stone against a busy background, so a steady edge matters more than blending, and its shadows should stay cool and slightly blue to read as stone rather than snow. The roses are small, dense and saturated, the only true reds in the whole picture, and they are what keeps the composition anchored, so it is worth doing them with the fine liner brush and leaving them until last.
